Volunteers

To role model the mission - “DDRC promotes awareness and supports communities to include persons with developmental disabilities, thereby strengthening communities for all citizens.” To assist the DDRC in maintaining the highest levels of program delivery for our clients.
The DDRC volunteer will apply their own unique skills and talents while learning fundamental skills in various settings, developing professional relationships while building their community.

Some evening and/or weekend work may be required from time to time based on assignment. A volunteer has no authority to make personal or Agency decisions on behalf of a client. All questions and concerns are to be referred to their assigned Support Worker as documented in the employment letter.


Leadership:

  • Act as the principle liaison between client(s) and staff
  • Participate in community activities to encourage and support client(s) in the community
  • Facilitate creative and critical thinking while using problem-solving skills
  • Use a high level of sound and independent judgment, reasoning and discretion
  • Ability to take direction and work efficiently with minimal supervision
  • Act as a positive role model for client(s)

 Administrative:

  • Primarily responsible for directly supporting the client(s) in the community
  • Develop a professional relationship with client(s) to effectively communicate and know their preferences for support
  • Motivate, encourage and focus client(s) to stay on task
  • Liaise with support networks; ensure regular communication with support networks
  • Promote community inclusion through fostering able/equal relationships
  • Educate the public with respect to community inclusion, choices, rights and responsibilities of ALL
  • Provide personal care as needed

Professional Development and Training:

  • Takes accountability to ensure all mandatory certifications and training are kept current

Education/Professional Certifications:

  • Volunteers must be 18 years of age or older
  • Time commitment of 8-20 hours per week
  • 1-2 years of volunteer experience
  • Knowledge of the developmental disability sector an asset

  • Ability to promote community inclusion of clients in accordance with their personal life goals
  • Ability to coordinate and access appropriate services and supports with clients and their networks
  • Proficient in MS Office and the Internet
  • Ability to provide personal care/physical support to clients
  • Superior time management skills, multitasking skills, and the ability to prioritize tasks with minimal supervision
  • Previous experience in handling confidential or sensitive information; knowledge of applicable data privacy laws
